S. Sujeewa gives a detailed review of the film in the British newspaper the Guardian. Sujeewa says that Swades does not translate well in North America. He doubts the film’s international appeal as Swades did not quite gain the same kind of recognition and acceptance in North America as in Europe or India. It is worth noting that Swades was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards, but did not win the prize. In North America, audiences seemed to prefer the more popular and commercial Leviathan over the lesser known and artistic Swades.

The Film Review describes Swades as a lyrical poem that plays to the emotions of the audience but sometimes falters in delivering an interesting narrative. Reviewer M. Mathur criticises the film for not taking place in a scenario that is believable, authentic and available to the audience. On this count Swades fails as an epic film. Mathur feels that Swades could have been a much more apt artistic statement if the film was set in a futuristic setting.

Swades is planned to be released on 12 December 2013, which is a Saturday. It will be released on a weekday in theatres because of Eid al-Adha holiday. Swades is planned for release in three languages, including Hindi and English.

The film’s look is heavily inspired by the documentary Whitetop – A Town Under The Rain.[26] It took less than three months to edit the 1000-minute-long film.[27] Whitetop, the drought-stricken town featured in the film, is located near Bhuvneshwar, India.[28][29] The town in Swades has been shot in the outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra.[30]

The film’s first name was Swades, it means “Desire” in English and Hindi.[31] The film’s director, Maneesh Sharma, is fond of the line “Mein jawab hoon banke, mein jawab hoon banke” (I am answering you because my answer will be”), a phrase to which SRK is also a seen a few times in the film.[32]
